Filomena | Justine Otto

The form of the portrait has accompanied Justine Otto's work throughout her career. While in older portraits the emphasis was on realism and the elaboration of the flesh, in more recent works the colours and the style itself are much more important, as in the painting ›Filomena‹.
The color explodes from the form, the boundaries between body parts sometimes only vaguely defined. This painting, in which color celebrates itself, is a culmination of the transition from figurative to more abstract painting that characterizes Justine Otto's recent work.

The artist Justine Otto, who is represented in well-known museums and collections, studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt under Prof. Michael Krebber. In search of the material resolution of an imagined inner image, she creates new pictorial worlds on canvas. In her figurative-abstract works, she shows a new approach to the surface and painterly materiality.
