Many European countries celebrated the centenary of Finland’s independence on December 6, 2017. It was a good time to take a closer look at the country that was the first in Europe to introduce women’s suffrage. After all, Finland is not a country that you visited by chance. Interest in Scandinavia and especially in Finland has grown strongly in recent years, even if the view of the country of Jean Sibelius, Eero Saarinen, Alvar Aalto, Paavo Nurmi, MA Numminen, Linus Torvalds or Kimi Räikkönen often has a very is more incomplete.

A selection of six young Finnish artists does not, of course, claim to be a complete reflection of the contemporary art landscape in Finland. The positions in the group exhibition 'KUUSI' (Finnish for 'six' and 'spruce') represent different varieties of art, unite the artists' works in an exciting combination and provide a small insight into the multifaceted contemporary art of Finland, which is increasingly present in the international art discourse. The six positions range from the predominantly abstract paintings by Olli Piippo, the large-format fabric and oil works by Jukka Rusanen, the abstract-figurative art of Ville Kylätasku and the photographs, paintings and drawings by Ville Andersson to the staged nature photographs by Sanna Kannisto and finally Mimosa Pale's performance.

With 'KUUSI', the Lachenmann Art gallery invited all visitors to approach Finland and its contemporary art in a personal way and to celebrate the centenary of the northernmost country in the European Union together with us.

The exhibition was supported by the traditional Finnish company iittala, whose objects were also presented in the exhibition rooms during the exhibition, as well as by the Embassy of Finland in Berlin, the Finnish Institute in Germany, the German-Finnish Society, Helsinki Contemporary and, last but not least, by the fantastic artists.

(Finnish: Thank you very much and congratulations!)

'KUUSI', a declaration of love to contemporary Finnish art, was opened on 9 September 2017 in Konstanz by:
