Similar to a memory being awakened, figures emerge in the artist's works and are brought to life through the contrast of colors. An intermediate space is created, connecting the past with the present. Some of the large-format oil paintings are created over several months. In addition, Sommer paints the smaller-format works, also in oil, often without priming or stretching on a frame.

His work is always embedded in a tension between the individual and the environment. The intimacy these images create is rooted in the everyday. Sommer is not concerned with the precise, unmistakable depiction of the individual. The inner worlds he portrays explore existential questions of being, feeling, and thinking. They are characterized by the seemingly realistic image of the face, surrounded by scenarios rendered with free application of paint as abstract color compositions or seemingly recognizable forms. Sommer's approach to these works operates on an emotional, tangible level, without neglecting the intellectual dimension.
