My favorite - Art spotted ›Werk 18 oT‹ by Christiane Pieper

In today's installment of the series ›My favourite - Art spotted‹, Anna from our gallery in Konstanz presents her new favorite work:

The works in the exhibition ›beyond the line‹ by Christiane Pieper clearly and directly connect with the viewers and particularly inspire me in this respect. The unifying function that deliberately placed lines in the artist's works have on the resulting dynamic color fields immediately captivated me upon first seeing the exhibition.

The work › Work 18 oT from 2024 particularly invited me to engage with it personally. Blue and green nuances merge into pleasant turquoise tones, which, together with white reflections, create a play of light and shadow and an inviting shimmer. On closer inspection, the work's color palette transitions into a faint, abstract suggestion of landscape, water, and clouds, which only the viewer's eye can complete. Thus, everything merges here in a dynamic process to form a unified image.

The longer I look at the work, the more the fields of color seem to extend beyond the edges of the canvas. The surface itself reveals itself to me in its vastness, its uniformity, and at the same time its structure, thus creating a captivating depth that finds no closure within the image.

For me, the image evokes a feeling of pleasant vastness, like a picturesque panorama suddenly unfolding before me, whether from a beautiful viewpoint or during a leisurely stroll. The reflection of the sky in the water causes the fields of color to interact with one another, creating a serene interplay of the elements, whose tranquility is also conveyed to the viewer. Structural features define themselves, the material, and the nature of the image, making it tangible and revealing the painting process. My perception as the viewer and the depicted subject matter in its effect are thereby connected and become part of the artwork.

Standing in front of the artwork, one is literally drawn INTO the picture and immersed in harmonious colors and subtle forms.
