With 11 load-bearing concrete columns and 19 doors, all spread over two levels, this was one of the most difficult tasks of the last 25 years of my work as an exhibition organizer. I had to get involved with the existing architecture. With a colorful concept, I was able to convince the gallery and demonstrate an axial extension of the entrance area... The Bordeaux red extends the entrance situation and thus merges seamlessly into the gallery complex. Two separate rooms give sculptures their own space. The phosphor yellow, which was painted on the walls on the lower level, makes the pictures, photos or paper works stand out optically against the walls. A concentrated recording of the individual works is now pre-programmed and guaranteed. In order to do justice to the artists, there was only one option. All the works that were to go on the walls were hung in a line (bottom edge) and at the same height. With this clearly formulated artistic position, the Garbage Matters exhibition at Lachenmann Art Frankfurt takes a stand on a current problem that concerns us all.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eSince 1995, Reifenberg has worked exclusively with the technique he developed of constructing mosaic-like images from individual pieces of smoothed plastic bags. This results in three-dimensional layers of material - 'landscapes of layers', in the artist's words - that move away from the flatness of a mural. A truly herculean task that requires enormous patience and precision work. Over the years, Reifenberg has amassed a huge collection of plastic bags from all over the world, which he stores in dozens of boxes in his Berlin studio, sorted by color. For his motifs, which range from small formats to oversized tableaux, he selects the areas on the bags to be cut out according to color, sometimes also according to writing and language, and uses them to create \"microplastics\" that are usually a few millimeters in size, but also larger areas. At the same time, the painting also offers the fiction of an island, which can be seen in the center of the picture, as a microcosm of our society, in which the individual island state represents the individual.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe idea of ​​the individual, the individualist, the person seeking a path is not only found in the works in which people are shown in dynamic movement. The painting \"Man with a suitcase\" shows a man in casual clothing with his arms hanging down, still in motion, who could be the guy next door. His head is turned to the side, his gaze directed towards the trees. The background shines in bright blue, which is reflected on the forest floor in front of him and immediately brings to mind a lake. In front of him is a brown leather suitcase. In this spot in the forest, which has produced tall tree trunks, wild bushes and long fern branches, it is an irritating image. And yet, on closer inspection, it is not unusual: the painting was created with the idea that everyone carries their own invisible suitcase with them throughout their lives. The metaphor of the (in)visible suitcase may be an unresolved life situation, a family mortgage, a complex, an unresolved problem, but it can also represent a positive life experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe longing for freedom, for air to breathe, for enough space for oneself far away from urbanity has always made the forest a place of refuge. The motivation for this can also be childhood memories of nature, the connection to trees, moss and bushes, and depending on the season, leaves or buds. While in the Middle Ages fools often stood for Vanitas because they were allowed to depict the ridiculous and inappropriate, since they themselves were ridiculous and inappropriate, the unimportance and meaninglessness of every human illustration was fundamentally a fundamental idea of ​​the Christian worldview. By confessing one's own insignificance as a message of remorse, medieval depictions of all kinds prevailed against this idea. At the beginning of the renovation of the old farmhouse, he embarked on an exciting journey through time: in the attic he found an old suitcase filled with old handwritten letters and photographs from the time of the First World War, which has now become part of the installation. The paper works shown were created from old documents that the artist discovered as well as new sheets of paper that were written on during the restoration, and show flying and resting birds as well as trees and tree houses. The subject of nature is not new in Jan Davidoff's work. A good two years ago, he gave our gallery space a magical atmosphere with a tree house built especially for the exhibition. Who among us has not climbed the tops of old trees as a child, sat in a tree house or at least dreamed of doing so? Our fantasies from back then seem to have matured in the current exhibition 'Presages'. The forest and the scene that the visitor enters when they pass through the old farmhouse door in the wooden wall exudes an uncertain atmosphere. The eye glides over metal and canvas works with dark, bare trees and old wood, it captures matte white on shiny black and lines of sight up to the tops of leafless natural giants. The windows are darkened, the light sources reduced, floor-to-ceiling twigs and branches rise up from a steel barrel, which, illuminated from below, cast eerie shadows on the ceiling. In the middle of the room is an old black farmhouse door on which a stone raven has taken up residence. The ear perceives the twittering of birds that seems to ignore all this, and immediately the eye discovers the sprouting of new buds, the rays of sunlight on golden branches and the gentle rippling of a stream.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eIn the exhibition, Jan Davidoff captures the media presence of the downfall, of the world conflagration, which can be felt everywhere these days and which, paradoxically, is surprisingly easy to live with.
