›Symbiose‹

›Symbiosis‹

Many who spend their youth with spray cans and graffiti are not necessarily expected one day to study painting and their name to become a household name in international contemporary art. Whether someone expected it from Lars Teichmann (born in 1980) is hard to say, but both is true: after a youth with graffiti and drawings he began to study painting at the age of 21 at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Among the few books he took with him from Chemnitz to Berlin in 2002 was "Der Bammes", a textbook on artist anatomy that describes the graphic design of body expression, posture and movement. Gottfried Bammes (1920-2007), professor of artist anatomy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, became internationally known in 1964 with the handbook and textbook for artists "Die Gestalt des Menschen", which was voted the most beautiful book of the year in the GDR (cf. Börnicke, Reimar, 2007). It has been translated into several languages and is considered a timeless standard work].

To this day, Lars Teichmann is concerned with the idea that craftsmanship (seen as a result, regardless of how it is developed) is the basis for artistic creation: "It is also an advantage to be able to ride a bicycle if you want to climb a motorcycle". And the comparison to music is somewhat less casual: when the technical basis, the mastery of the instrument, begins the interpretation, the alienation, the abstraction - the artistic expression. The less you know and know, the less you can use; the more you have seen, learned, understood, worked out, the more varied the possibilities.
Lars Teichmann's works are reminiscent of paintings from earlier epochs; he finds inspiration in costume books, in historical photographs, in novels. The figures depicted on Teichmann's canvas are often larger than the viewer himself, they remain in stately poses, in a calm posture or on horseback, they dance and look at us facelessly. The artist offers both individual and collective visual memory a new way of perception and directs the viewer's gaze to reduced and unembellished canvases, which have such a strong expression in their composition that they do without superfluous attributes.

From 2002 to 2008 Lars Teichmann studied fine arts with Prof. Wolfgang Petrick and Prof. Daniel Richter at the UDK Berlin. In 2006 he was a master student of Prof. Valérie Favre. Numerous solo and group exhibitions already took place during his studies and led him in the following years to Milan, Modena, Prague, Poznan, to the 54th Biennale in Venice, Munich and many other places. His works can be found in public and well-known private collections, such as the SØR Rusche Collection, the Benetton Foundation, the Berlinische Galerie, the Collezione Euromobil and the Falze di Piave.

It was a particular pleasure for our Galerie Lachenmann Art two years ago that Lars Teichmann's works could be seen at the exhibition "The Grand Opening" at the opening of the gallery in Constance. Since then, we have enjoyed close cooperation and friendship, which we would like to celebrate with the solo exhibition "Symbiosis". The tenth exhibition in our gallery in Constance is symbiotically linked to the first exhibition in the Satellite Office in Zurich; the parallel exhibitions in Germany and Switzerland are linked in content and complement each other in an impressive way. Both segments question the focus of Lars Teichmann's work in a way that is otherwise only possible in museums.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Anita Gödiker and her team from the Satellite Office Business & Conference Center and the Swiss art collector Michele Martucci, with whom the collaboration is a great pleasure and inspiration. Preparing and organising an exhibition of this size in two locations in two countries requires the help of many more hands and heads. Here in Constance I am very grateful to Christina Wigger and Theresa Brauer for their dedicated work in all areas of the gallery. We owe Annette Apel from Berlin the impressive photographs of the artist's works. I thank Lars Teichmann himself for his confidence, his refreshing and pleasant manner as well as the fantastic cooperation.

All our commitment and enthusiasm let us grow together and grow together, form an extraordinary unity and a symbiosis.
