Die Ausstellung ›MIRAMARE‹ mit Arbeiten des italienischen Künstlers Flavio de Marco legt den Fokus auf die Phantasie-Dimension von Landschaften im Zeitalter des Massentourismus und der Online-Buchungen.
Das klassische Landschaftsbild begann vor vielen Jahren, auf Postkarten, Werbeplakaten und Tourismusbroschüren Einzug zu halten und machte sich vor mehreren Jahren auf, sich in die Darstellung von Computerbildschirm-Landschaften zu schleichen. Es tauchte auf den Webseiten von Reiseveranstaltern und Tourismusverbänden auf, als Hintergrundbild des Anfrage-Formulars von Fluggesellschaften und als verheißungsvolle Vorschau in die Parks und Strände großer Hotelketten.
Die heutigen glänzenden Ansichten von Reisezielen auf ebensolchen Internetseiten nähren das Verlangen, selbst Teil dieser Welt zu sein. Die Betrachtung dieser bereinigten und mit Bildbearbeitung veränderten Ansichten wird fast als konkrete Erfahrung wahrgenommen und verändert somit die Wahrnehmung des Reisenden.
Flavio de Marco betrachtet den Computerbildschirm als ein Fenster zur gegenwärtigen Welt, indem er ihn zum Modell, zum Vorbild seiner künstlerischen Arbeit und seines Schaffens macht. Er begann im Jahre 1999, Bildschirmansichten von touristischen Webseiten zum Gegenstand seiner Leinwandarbeiten zu machen und beraubte sie jeglichen funktionalen Aspekts: ohne Icons und Texte verwandelt er die Bildschirmanzeige von einem virtuellen Ort mit praktischem Nutzen in einen real existierenden Gegenstand, welcher - einer Landschaft gleich - lediglich betrachtet werden kann und nicht veränderbar ist. Seither transformiert Flavio de Marco den virtuellen Bildschirminhalt durch das Medium der Malerei. Ein Abbild am Rande des Verschwindens, ein Ort, von dem man mit einem Mausklick zum nächsten gelangt oder von ihm verschwindet, wird zu einer physischen Oberfläche und erinnert uns an die Kostbarkeit einer auf ihre digitale Existenz reduzierten Welt. Nicht mehr das Erleben einer anderen Landschaft oder Kultur wird zum Ziel, sondern die Konsumation einer fiktiven, teilweise bis in kleinste Detail inszenierten und dadurch künstlichen, übersimplifizierten Version unseres Planeten.
Die Ausstellung ›MIRAMARE‹ bei Lachenmann Art in Konstanz zeigt eine Serie von groß-, mittel- und kleinformatigen Werken. Die Großformate (200x300cm) nutzen die Abbildungen auf Webseiten verschiedener Fluggesellschaften. Eine Auswahl an Zeichnungen im A3-Format, welche an unterschiedlichen Orten des Mittelmeeres unter freiem Himmel entstanden sind, stehen hier als Kontrapunkt zu den entfremdeten Leinwandarbeiten, welche im geschlossenen Raum des Künstler-Ateliers ausschließlich unter Zuhilfenahme digitaler Vorlagen geschaffen wurden.
Parallel finden momentan drei Einzelausstellungen mit Werken Flavio de Marcos in italienischen Museen statt. In drei großen, international berühmten Museen -der Galleria Sabauda in Turin, der Galleria Estense in Modena und dem Palazzo Corsini in Rom- stehen Flavio de Marcos Arbeiten als Kontrapunkt zur klassischen Malerei der vergangenen Jahrhunderte, welche nicht nur durch die perspektivische Darstellung, sondern auch durch größtenteils enorme Detailliertheit die Natur einzufangen versuchte, gegenüber.
The exhibition ›MIRAMARE‹, presenting works by Italian artist Flavio de Marco, focuses on the fantasy-dimensions of landscapes in a time of mass tourism and online travel booking.
Many years ago, the classical landscape image started to appear in postcards, advertising bills and touristic brochures. However, in the last few years it has made its way onto the computer screen. It started to appear on the websites of travel agencies and tourism associations, as a background image to airline booking forms and as a promising preview of desirable parks and beaches owned by the larger hotel companies.
Today´s glossy views of travel destinations on the internet nourish its viewers’ desire to be part of this world. Looking at these cleaned and manipulated images is nearly being perceived as a real experience and changes the perception of the traveller.
Flavio de Marco regards the computer screen as a window on the modern world and has made it a role model for his artistic work. In 1999, he started using screenshots of touristic websites as subjects of his paintings, stripping off all the functions, texts and labels. In so doing, he changed a virtual space of practical use into a real object that cannot be changed and that has no other use than perception. Like the classical landscape painting.
Since then Flavio de Marco has been transforming the virtual content of computer screens via the medium of painting. Images just about to disappear, just one click away from a different destination and a different landscape, become a physical surface and remind us how precious the real world is, now being reduced to a virtual existence. It is not the discovery of a landscape or culture that we are aiming for but the consumption of its unreal, partly manipulated, over-simplified version of our planet.
The exhibition ›MIRAMARE‹ at Lachenmann Art Gallery in Konstanz / Germany is showing a series of large, medium and small works. The large works (200 x 300 cm) show the images of the websites of different airlines, representing the stripped images mentioned above. A selection of DIN-A3 drawings, all drawn at different places on the Mediterranean, form a counterpart to the large scale paintings that were created exclusively from digital images in the artist´s studio.
This spring and summer, Flavio de Marco’s works are being presented simultaneously in three major Italian Museums: the Galleria Sabauda in Torino, the Galleria Estense in Modena and the famous Palazzo Corsini in Rome. Flavio de Marco’s works act as a counterpoint to the historical Italian Landscape Paintings of past centuries, which try to catch the essence of nature through great detail and centred perspective
