Archaic aesthetic

Ana Rajcevic grew up in her father’s sculpture workshop. Today she uses a combination of traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology to develop her artistic visions. Her sculptural works start off as nothing more than charcoal sketches on paper. The prizewinning artist produces three-dimensional objects in her studios in Berlin and London. The handcrafted Head Pieces are made up of fiberglass, polyurethane and rubber, they are extremely light and thin.

Ana Rajcevic’s subjects are the transformation, artificial limbs and extensions to humans. The so-called Head Pieces  from her series shown here “ANIMALS: the other side of evolution” are inspired by animal skeletons and adjusted in size for the human body. They reflect the basic fascination surrounding the similarities between humans and animals. Her objects function completely independently as sculptures but all have a side that is adjusted for the human face. When placed on the human body, they become a portable sculpture and blend into the face, head and neck in a breathlessly aesthetic matter of course.

Ana Rajcevic’s Head Pieces shimmer between plastic, artificial limbs and accessories without a clear decision for one of these categories. On the orchestrated photograph the sculpture is combined with the person. The matt surface of the Head Pieces is clearly artificial and depicts the contrast with the soft, human skin. The similarity between the objects and real bones is just as much planned as astonishing. The artist uses real skeleton structures as a template. It is this naturalness which can be disturbing. This irritating moment that the perceiver experiences is intentional.

Ana Rajcevic shakes up the obvious; her art comes home, because it all concerns the Human Being. Her inter-play between evolution and mutation develops creatures which appear both basic and futuristic at the same time. Strange and trusted. Grotesque and aesthetic. Ana Rajcevic creates a new human silhouette and as such deals with fundamental questions concerning self-awareness, identity and the construction of oneself.
